Arthro-Pod EP 152: Artificial Intelligence, Entomology, and Extension

Hello bug lovers and our new machine overlords and welcome to a new episode of Arthro-Pod. Today, Jody, Jon, and Mike, decide to swerve a bit out of their lane and discuss their thoughts about artificial intelligence, specifically the intersection of AI and entomology/Extension. There is a lot of clamor over what AI means for the future and what it means ethically. Extension is one area of the academy that seems like AI may have a profound impact on. The gang tries to slice through the hype and share their feelings as well as some reporting on artificial intelligence. Tune in to hear more and share your thoughts with the crew as well!

Arthro-Pod EP 151: Delusory parasitosis and entomology

Hello friends, and welcome back to Arthro-Pod! Today's episode is a look at a phenomenon many entomologists will encounter, even if they aren't ready to, known as delusory parasitosis. Also referred to as delusions of infestation and Ekbom's syndrome, this situation involves a person believing that their body and home are infested with some sort of biting or stinging pest, despite there being no evidence that is true. We're all predisposed to interpret certain signals as being caused by an insect or mite trying to crawl on us or bite us and unfortunately, sometimes this can further manifest as delusory parasitosis. Sufferers are often desperate for help and entomologists are often helpless to provide assistance. Today we wanted to outline some of the background of delusory parasitosis and talk about how entomologists can help, while also protecting themselves.

Arthro-Pod EP 66: Our Most Interesting Samples and Cases

In today's year end spectacular, the Arthro-Pod gang discuss some of the interesting insects and samples they have come across at work. As extension professionals, it is our job to help people with their possible pest problems or teach them about how insects might not be all bad. That means we get to see lots of things and solve many mysteries! Tune in to hear about the mysteries like the enigma of the antique bottle cap eater, the riddle of the click beetle in a muffin, and the puzzle of the watercolor brush destroyer.

A true whodunnit!

Arthro-Pod on the Road: At the ESA NCB Share Fair

Jody and Jonathan take Arthro-Pod on the road and head up to Wisconsin! There, they take part in the Entomological Society of America's North Central Branch meeting and interview entomologists as they go through the Extension Share Fair.

At our podcast booth we had our equipment and a large die for volunteers to roll. After getting a number they answered the corresponding questions. Tune in to find out what

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the booth and to swap stories!

Welcome to Arthro-Pod 2.0!

Hi there bug lovers! It's been a while since I released an episode and for that I apologize. Arthro-Pod is one of the favorite aspects of my job but it can be tough as a one-man band. That is why I am excited to announce that Arthro-Pod is going through a bit of a relaunch and adding two more hosts to the program! All of us are extension entomologists with a mission to bring entomological knowledge to the masses! Before you tune in, read on to meet your new best bug friends!

Dr. Jody Green, also of University of Nebraska, is joining up and bringing a ton of energy and urban entomology expertise!

You have met Dr. Michael Skvarla on the Arthropod 101 segments we do but he will now be a permanent host, coming to us from Penn State and sharing his knowledge about insect ID and systematics!

We are teaming up to bring you more entertainment, more knowledge, and best of all more episodes! We will still have interview episodes but now will also offer episodes centered around interesting insect cases, journal club type episodes, or just choosing an arthropod we have been getting lots of questions about featuring them for a half hour. I hope you can feel the excitement and that you will keep tuning in and telling your friends about the show!

Thanks for all your support!

The Bug Squad y'all!
